How To Delay Skin Ageing

Have you looked in the mirror closely and seen the first signs of ageing on your face? It could be anything from a wrinkle, pigmentation spots, to lines around your lips, eyes and on your forehead.

Ageing is the natural process of the human body. As we get older, the complex biological processes taking place in our organs start to take a toll on them, and the processes which are responsible for the ageing such as glycation and over oxidation of the cells begin to accelerate. This acceleration in the age is caused by excessive sugar intake, stress and having a lifestyle which causes the accumulation of toxic products in the body. But before you go for any other anti-ageing means, a little lifestyle modification will go a long way to delay your ageing.

Avoid sun exposure: As important as sunlight is, it is number 1 cause of early ageing. The harmful UVA and UVB rays cause the free radical reaction, which causes age spots and breaks down the collagen and elastin, resulting in wrinkles. Protect your skin by staying indoors as much as possible.

If you really have to go out, use a sunscreen with high SPF 20 to 30 minutes before you step out.

Drink as much water as possible: Drinking inadequate amount of water is the second major cause of early ageing. Our body requires water to form hyaluronic acid which is the natural skin plumper and keeps the skin moist and elastic. If you fail to hydrate your body, it will eventually lead to the shrinkage of the skin causing wrinkles. Additionally, water is responsible for flushing our harmful toxins responsible for ageing from your body through the kidneys.

That beauty sleep means a lot: When you keep awake for a large amount of time, your body starts producing cortisol which leads to cell apoptosis in the skin. Secondly, the moment we go to sleep, our body starts restorative mechanism which repairs the damage cells and forms new cells in the skin. This is one of the reasons most of the topical medications are advised to apply at night.

Try facial yoga: Like every exercise, facial yoga exercises our facial muscles and keep them in top notch condition. The toxins are flushed from the face into the blood stream by the constant stretching of the muscles and collagen and elastin breakage is minimal, leading to a younger looking face.

Eat healthy food: Consumption of fresh vegetables, fruits as well as nuts and seeds are a powerful source of antioxidants which fight the reactive oxygen species on our behalf. These are the most effective anti ageing foods which have the ability to keep ageing at bay for a long period of time.

Quit smoking: Apart from all the ill-effects the smoking has on our body, it is also responsible for the premature ageing of the skin mainly by reducing blood supply and vital nutrients to the skin. This lead to the collagen and elastin breakdown making the skin lose its elasticity and moisture.

Keep away from stress:  The stress hormone cortisol is responsible for breaking the cell layers and thinning the skin which can lead to wrinkle formation. Stress also causes us to make certain expressions for example furrowed brows and pruned mouth. Making these expressions for a long period of time can cause wrinkles.

Use a moisturiser: Many women are so obsessed with anti-ageing creams that they simply overlook the power of a simple light weight moisturiser. An appropriate moisturiser according to your skin type will make the skin moist and dull the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Don’t wash your face too much: water strips the face of the natural moisture and barrier oils. If you really need to wash your face multiple times a day, do so with a cleanser which has moisturiser in it.

Consult your dermatologist: if you’d like to reverse the signs of ageing already present on your face, then you must consult a dermatologist in Cosmedocs Clinic present in Southampton.
